Exploring how people face the tragic twists and turns of fate, The Tale of Sitti Nurbaya is an adaptation of Marah Roesli’s 1930 novel of the same title.

Set in Padang, a small village at the time of the Dutch colonial era, it relives the journey of a beautiful young lady, daughter of a successful businessman and betrothed of an equally stunning man from a prominent family. Possessed of wealth, beauty, fame and of course love, life for Sitti and Samsul was perfect.

Uh oh! Oh no!

Until, of course, the world came crashing down. Hard.

This coming 24th January 2010, SMU Komunitas Indonesia (SMUKI) will be following their stories to bring you through a journey of love, sacrifice and fate in their annual production – GAYA 2010, THE TALE OF SITTI NURBAYA. This musical drama was written by Putra Muskita and Siti Fatimah Ayuningdyah, produced by Helen Wijaya, directed by Aldian Salim, and performed by casts and dancers, all SMUKI’s very own members. It will be a compilation of Indonesian talents in promoting Indonesian arts and culture through a musical production with amazing casts and dancers, moving story and a compelling journey for all.

For what it has in store, GAYA 2010 will be featured for the first time in the SMU Arts Festival and has been chosen to be a part of SMU’s 10th Anniversary celebration. It seems that as Sitti resigns to her fate and Samsul desperately fights against it, it is time for us to admit that GAYA 2010 – The Tale of Sitti Nurbaya is worth a break from our studies to watch.
